Obscura was created in 1995 as a vehicle for consulting activities and investments that were not appropriate for Anonymizer Inc. Since the sale of Anonymizer, Obscura has become fully independent.

Obscura has invested in a number of early stage technology and security companies, taking an active role on their boards.

Obscura provides consulting to businesses, NGOs, law enforcement, and governments.

Lance Cottrell

Lance Cottrell founded Anonymizer in 1995, and is an internationally recognized expert in cryptography, online privacy, and Internet security.  He is principal author on multiple Internet privacy and security technology patents. He took Anonymizer to a very successful exit in 2008, stayed on as chief scientist of the acquiring company Ntrepid, eventually transitioning to being a strategic advisor. He now advises startups through FeelTheBoot.com. He frequently speaks at major conferences and writes for numerous publications. He consults and invests through Obscura.com. He holds a MS in Physics from the University of California, San Diego and a BS in Physics from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
